CandiDater was the first VoteMatch tool in Colombia for the 2018 presidential elections. Around 36 million eligible voters were able to compare the positions of the most important candidates with each other and with their own views online.
CandiDater is operated by the news platform ¡Pacifista!, which is financed by the German Embassy in Colombia. '¡Pacifista!' was a project by the Colombian branch of VICE magazine and a group of Colombian journalists. It was co-financed by the 'Office of the High Commissioner for Peace Colombia UN', which refers to the 'United Nations Human Rights Office in Colombia (OHCHR)'. The project aimed to support peacebuilding in Colombia.
CandiDater was supported by the VoteMatch Network: ProDemos (StemWijzer) in the Netherlands, and the Federal Agency for Civic Education (Wahl-O-Mat) in Germany.
CandiDater also provides information about formal voting procedures. This offer was extended to political actors who had a realistic chance of winning at least a certain percentage of votes. In Colombia in 2018, the five candidates that political observers believe will win the election are: Iván Duque, Gustavo Petro, Sergio Fajardo, Germán Vargas Lleras and Humberto de La Calle.
CandiDater Colombia was designed to resemble the Tinder app, which is the most widely used social network in Colombia.
Thanks to a large number of renowned media partners, the support of VICE and 'Pacifista!', and a broad social media campaign, the first VoteMatch reached over 600,000 users in the run-up to the presidential election.
